A group of attendees and more than 10 officials and pastors attended a church service over the weekend to pray for Ukraine’s protection as tensions with Russia rise.
Saturday evening’s service was held at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral on Evergreen Road south of Nine Mile Road in Southfield.

Russia is said to have recently increased its military presence along the Ukrainian border after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and rising tensions and military skirmishes in the years that followed left 14,000 dead.
There are more than 37,000 residents of the Detroit metro area who consider themselves to be of Ukrainian ancestry, according to 5-year estimates from the 2015 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey.
