Church service in Cornwall to celebrate £220,000 worth of repairs to Wendron

A church near Helston is to celebrate the completion of £220,000 restoration work with a special service for the community.

It was in 2017 that the 11th century Wendron Church began the huge task of raising £50,000 to unlock a major grant for the remainder of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

About four years later, that work is finally complete – and now the church wants to say thank you to everyone who helped make it possible.

This Sunday at 10:30 a.m. the church will hold a special thanksgiving service that everyone is welcome to join.

Church Secretary Henrietta Sanford said: “The congregation would be delighted to be able to thank its generous supporters and hopes that as many people as possible can come out and celebrate this success.

“There will be a chance to share some post-service refreshments and watch the restoration work that so many have worked hard to accomplish.”

She said the repair work that had been carried out meant the church could continue to serve the regular congregation and the wider community.

“Many fundraising events took place; regular morning coffees, barn dances, Christmas sales, concerts, exhibits of Wendron School children’s artwork, the Just Giving program, stalls at Porthleven Harbor Head and other imaginative ventures.

“The congregation and friends of the church were able to raise the required amount with the help of the charities involved and the grant providers,” she added.

“The PCCs were able to thank many donors who helped them but not all of them received a thank you letter because their donation came without contact details. Indeed, some very generous people preferred to remain anonymous.

“The members of the church would like to publicly thank them and share with them the value of their contribution. Without the generosity of all their financial supporters, it would not have been possible to complete the work that made this listed building, former place of worship, for the use of future generations.

“The church has served the community for 1,000 years and has witnessed the joys and sorrows of the wider parish, supporting families at weddings, funerals and baptisms as well as upholding the faith of its own Christian community.”
